Anxiety is the most prevalent mental health condition in children and adolescents and there are a range of proven strategies that have shown to work for most people. In Cognitive Behavioural based therapies, the aim is to decrease the power of the thought so that the distress associated with the thought is reduced allowing for clearer thinking and improved functioning so that people can manage stress and enjoy their life more. As part of this process, it becomes easier to separate the facts from the imagination and decide how to act.
The NEON approach is a way to conceptualise the clinical benefits of CBT-based therapies, including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. Examples and outcomes are based on clinical research and observations from my work with parents, children and schools. The information provided in this article is general in nature and decided to educate and inform it is not intended to replace therapy in any way. It does have some skills and ideas that can be implemented on a general basis.
This information is provided for education and interest and a hope that you will see that there are pathways through School Anxiety. Although you might read this and hear some puzzle pieces clicking into place, you might read this and feel overwhelmed. As an author, I never know where the information I share will land. The Centre for School Anxiety is here to support you and your child. You can book an appointment to help manage your child’s anxiety, or your own stress about the school system, school anxiety or school refusal. You can also speak with your GP, School Counsellor or Wellbeing Staff and your child's teacher. You do not have to do this alone.
