Creating Connection

Adolescents and sexuality

18/9/2017

he topic of adolescents and sexuality is popping up a lot around me at the moment.  Gender identify and sexuality is a hot topic with the postal vote on marriage equality, and it invokes conversation in both adults and adolescents alike.

I have just completed a short video on this and wanted to share it with you.  Some of the points that I touch on are below.  You can watch it via this link http://bit.ly/2yjsifb.

1. In adolescence exploring relationships, sexuality, gender and sexual identity is normal.
2. In middle secondary school casual and group dating is normal. However, many adolescents will be doing this earlier, and many later.
3. Whether your child is experiencing early sexualisation will depend on many factors including timing of puberty, extent of tv watching, extent of exposure through sexualisation through social media, expectations of peers/social pressure, self-image and mental health.
4. Like with other areas of development, you can help your child with this area of development, by developing good relationships with them.
5. It is estimated around 50% of adolescence have a sexual experience before they finish high school. 6. Clear maternal communication about sex and potentially negative consequences can be linked with less risky behaviour.
7. You can talk to them, ensure they have exposure to good quality sex education, go along to any talks the school puts on, pass on your values, set clear expectations and boundaries.

If you would like to talk someone about concerns you have about your child's relationships, we would like help. You can book a session by emailing youngminds.psychology@gmail.com or during business hours by phone on 0408533515. We are on the web at www.positiveyoungminds.com.au and on facebook at https://www.facebook.com/positiveyoun.... If instagram is your thing, we are there too! https://www.instagram.com/positiveyou.... If you believe, like I do, that it takes a village to raise a child, share this video with your tribe, so we call all work together to raise wonderful young adults.
